Tomato onion chutney is a good accompaniment along with dosa, idli, uttappa etc. It can be had with rice too. this is a diet friendly dish.
If you do not have coconut at home or if you want a diet friendly chutney, you can opt for this. This can be made instantly as tomatoes and onions are always available at home.
Let us have a look at how to make this easy and tangy chutney.
Prepartion time;: 5 minutes
cooking time: 10 minutes
serves 2-3
Ingredients:
2 big ripe tomatoes
1 big onion
2-3 red chilli
salt to taste
a pinch of fenugreek powder.
a small piece of tamarind (optional) i did not use it as i am totally away from this.
1/4 tsp sugar free
1 tsp oil.
tempering:
1 tsp oil
1 tsp mustard seeds
few curry leaves
a pinch of asafoetida
Method:
Method : 1
Boil water in a vessel, add the tomatoes, bring to one boil and switch off gas.
keep covered for 10 minutes. after 10 minutes take out the tomatoes from the water and run under the cold water, remove skin, chop the same and keep aside.
heat oil in a kadai, add the red chilli and fry them, keep aside.
in thesame oil add the onion and saute for 3 minutes.
let everything cool and grind to a smooth paste - tomato, onion, chilli, tamarind.
add salt, fenugreek powder, sugarfree and mix well.
temper with the ingredients mentioned above.
garnish with coriander leaves (as i love coriander, wherever possible i add it).
serve with dosa, idli, rice, chapati.
Method: 2
Instead of boiling the tomato, you can chop them and saute along with onion.
