UPMA KOZHUKKATTAI (RICE DUMPLINGS)

Upma kozhukkattai  or rice dumplings is made of rice rava along with tur dal, coconut, green chilli etc.  it is quite filling and a nice breakfast with chutney or morukootan, sambar etc.  The preparation of this is first you have to make a upma out of the rava and then make small round shaped kozhukkattai or elongated shape and steam it.

The rice rava is made at home.    How to make the rava at home is explained below.  You can make use of the idli rava too which is available in the market to make this but I prefer to prepara the same at home.  If you are using idli rava, use less water.

Let us look at the recipe now:

Preparation time: 20 minutes
Cooking time:30-45 minutes
Serves: 4

Ingredients:

1 cup rice rava
½ cup tur dal
½ cup grated fresh coconut
2-3 green chilli (adjust according to your taste)
Curry leaves
Asafetida
1 tsp mustard seeds
1 tsp urid dal
¼ cup oil (reduce it if you are health conscious)
Salt as per taste

Method

1.  Wash and soak the tur dal for 30 minutes.
2.  Drain the water and coarsely grind them with green chilli and keep aside.
3.  In a big kadai, heat oil, splutter the mustard seed and urid dal.
4.  Add the curry leaves, asafetida
5.  Add 2 -2  1/2 cup water in the kadai
6.  Add salt, tur dal, coconut and allow to boil.
7.  When it starts boiling, add the rava and mix well till it is cooked like upma and the water evaporated from it completely.
8.  While mixing rava, ensure that there are no lumps forming in it.
9.  Transfer the same to a plate and allow to cool.

10. In the meantime, keep water to boil  in the same kadai.

11.  Take a idli mould, grease them and keep in kadai.  Instead of greasing you can keep plantain leaf also.

12.  Dip hand in water and start making round or oval shape kozhukkatai and place it in the idli mould.

13.  Steam cook the same for 10-15 minutes.

How to serve:

How to make rice rava

4.  Spread the ground powder on a plate or paper to become dry
5. Sieve them to extract the rice powder and rava separately.
6. Completely dry the same and can be stored or else fungus will form.
