Manthakali or Black nightshade - it has got a tiny fruit almost purplish in colour is eaten as it is whereas the raw ones are used for making curry. The raw ones are put in curd and salt and sun dried which is called Manathakali Vathal. This vathal is stored and can be fried whenever you want.

Cooking time: 40 minutes (Cooking dal in pressure cooker+ sambar)
Serves: 2
Ingredients:
¼ cup manathakali leaves
1 cup of boiled tur dal or moongdal ( i used split moong dal with husk)
1 tsp sambar powder
Turmeric powder
Salt as per taste
1/2 tsp amchur powder or 1/4 cup tamarind pulp
1/2 tsp amchur powder or 1/4 cup tamarind pulp
Tempering:
1 tsp oil
1 tsp mustard seeds
Curry leaves
Asafoetida
Method:
1. Cook the manathakali leaves in tamarind pulp with turmeric and salt till the leaves are cooked and the raw smell of tamarind goes off. If you are using amchur powder,the same can be added along with the sambhar powder.
