Ellu saadam or sesame seed rice is one of the Chitrannams (varieties of rice preparation) made during Pathinettamperukku. On Saturday, this rice is made and offered to Shani Bhagwan. If it is given to the crows also, Shani bhagwan bless us because the Vehicle (Vaahanam) of Shani is Crow, is the belief.
Apart from the above, it is a flavourful rice, I love to eat. Since I forgot to click the picture separately on the day of Pathinettamperukku, shall post the picture later on.
Let us have a look at the recipe now
Ingredients:
2 cups cooked rice
100 gm sesame seeds
6-8 red chillies (adjust according to your requirement)
1/2 cup til oil (sesame seed oil, nallennai)
salt
For tempering
1 tsp mustard seeds
1 tsp chana dal
1 tsp urad dal
few curry leaves
a pinch of asafoetida.
Method:
Wash the sesame seeds and drain the water.
Heat the kadai, add the sesame seed in it and fry it will pop up.
when the crackling sound stops, it is understood that the seeds are done. or you can just press it with your fingers and check, keep aside. Heat one tsp oil and fry the red chillies. when it cools down, grind the chillies first and then add the sesame seeds and coarsely grind the same. do not make a paste of it.
Heat remaining oil in kadai. add the mustard seeds, chana dal, urad dal, asafoetida, curry leaves. when it is done, add the rice and salt in it. Now add the sesame seed powder and mix well. serve hot with appalams.
NOTE: If you want, you can add fried cashews and peanuts in it.
