BIITER GOURD FRY, PAVAKKA FRY, KARELA FRY, KAIPPAKKA FRY - DIET FRIENDLY

BITTER GOURD FRY, PAVAKKA FRY, KARELA FRY, KAIPPAKKA FRY - DIET FRIENDLY

Karela or bittergourd or pavakka or kaipakka is bitter in taste but has got medicinal values as well as quite tasty if prepared well.  For diet friendly people, this method is quite ok with them as i have not used oil at all in this preparation.  I have already posted one recipe which is fried in oil.  Considering the health conscious people, i have made this in microwave oven and is cent percent diet friendly.  I could have very well  included the same in the same post but it will not serve the purpose much as people will think about frying them in oil only.

Hence I am posting this recipe separately for diet friendly people.  Ingredients are same but instead of frying in oil, i have cooked the same in microwave.

Let us have a look at it:

Preparation time:  15 minutes
cooking time:20-30 minutes
serves:  3-4

Ingredients:

1/4 kg karela
1/2 tsp red chilli powder
3 tbsp bengal gram(chana dal) flour
1 tsp cumin powder
2 green chilli (optional)
1tsp coriander powder
1 tsp dry mango powder (amchur powder)
1/4 tsp turmeric powder
1 tsp garam masala
1/4 tsp cumin seeds
a generous pinch of asafoetida.
salt as required

Method:

Wash and wipe the karela with a dry towel
cut the same in round shape.  Let the seeds be there do not throw away.

take a mixing bowl and add the masalas in it.

mixed masala
mix well and add the karela,  keep on mixing with your hand.
after sometime you can see that there is little moisture in it and the karela  will get coated with the masalas.

Take a microwave plate, I had one non stick one, spread the karelas in it and microwave in 100 power  for 10 minutes.  Open the door of the microwave, mix them well again, spread and again cook in 100 power for  another 10 minutes till it becomes crispy.  If the slices are thin, you will get nice crispy karela  fry  within 20 minutes.  if the slices are thick, you may have to keep for 5 more minutes.

It can be eaten just like that or can have it with sambar rice, dal rice, curd rice, or as a side dish for chapati with dal.
