BANANA STEM THORAN, VAZHATHANDU THORAN, BANANA STEM STIR FRY, VAZHATHANDU PORIYAL

Banana stem thoran is made with finely chopped banana stem, coconut etc.  It has got medicinal value. see the post of Banana Stem soup for more details of health benefits.  It is a simple and easy recipe to make and goes well with samabar rice, dal rice, curd rice, chapati etc.

I love any preparation of banana stem viz. thoran, pachadi, raita, soup, karuvadam, sambar, chutney etc.

Let us look at the ingredients now:

Ingredients:

1 cup banana stem finely chopped.
2-3 tbsp grated coconut
1-2 green chilli (depending upon your spice level)
¼ tsp cumin seeds
Turmeric powder
Salt

Tempering

1 red chilli  broken into pieces
1 tsp mustard seeds
1 tsp urid dal
1 tsp  coconut oil (you can increase if you want)
Few curry leaves

Method:

Cut the banana stem in rounds, remove the thread, if any.
Then chop them finely and put in water with butter milk in it.
This is done to remove the stains.

Coarsely grind the green chilli, coconut, cumin seeds and keep aside.

Wash the banana stem and cook the same with turmeric powder and salt in ½ cup water.  If your copping the same very finely, can cook directly or pressure cook the same for 1 whistle.  Remove the excess water if your are cooking the same in pressure cooker.

When it is cooked, mix the ground paste of coconut in it.   temper with the above ingredients, mix well and serve hot with sambar rice, rasam rice, curd rice, chapatti etc. as a side dish.

NOTE;  you can make this thoran with karamani, red chowli, chuvanna payaru, cow pea or cow gram
