OKRA IN TAMARIND PULP (LADY'S FINGER, BHINDI, VENDAKA, VENDAKAYA), VENDAKA PULI



OKRA IN TAMARIND SYRUP (VENDAKA, VENDAKAYA, BHINDI) VENDAKA PULI

Vendaka puli or okra in tamarind syrup, a bit sweet and tangy dish,  can be made very easily and served as a main dish or side dish with plain rice or dal rice, rice with molagootal etc.  Normally, it is served with rice and roasted papad.

Okra cooked in tamarind pulp is a tasty dish prepared without much hassle.  Let us take a look at the ingredients and method of preparing this traditional dish.

Ingredients:

3-4 Bhindi
1-2 green chilli (adjust according to your spice level)
a small piece of ginger (optional)
1 medium size onion finely chopped
a small piece of jaggery
turmeric powder
salt
few curry leaves

1 tsp mustard seeds
1/4 tsp  fenugreek seeds
a pinch of asafoetida

Method:

wash and pat dry the okra.
cut both the ends and cut into small round pieces
chop the green chilly and ginger.
chop the onion

Heat oil in  a kadai, add the mustard seeds and fenugreek seeds. when it splutters, add the asafoetida, curry leaves, green chilly, ginger and onion.  saute for few minutes. add the tamarind pulp, salt, turmeric powder, jaggery  and bring to a boil till the raw smell of tamarind goes off.   Your vendaka puli or okra in tamarind pulp is ready to serve with hot rice and roasted papad.



Variation:   you can reduce it and bring to a semi solid consistency also and serve as a side dish for dal rice, molagootal rice etc.
