MEDU VADA (Ulunthu vadai, uzhunnu vada)

Hot yummy medu vada with sambar or chutney anytime, we are ready to eat.  My son likes only medu vada. He does not like Dal vada at all. Medu vada is made out of urid dal with some green chilli.  Some people add bits of coconut.  Some add chopped green chilli but i grind the green chilli along with the urid dal as my family members does not like the bite of green chilli in vada.  Let us have a look at the ingredients and method of making this.

medu vada  உ லு ந்து வ டை ഉ ഴു ന്നു വട  मेदु वडा

Total time taken : 1 hr.
yield : 15-18 small vadas

Ingredients:

1 cup urid dal
5-6 green chilli
few curry leaves
a generous pinch of asafoetida
coconut bits (optional) 1 tbsp
salt
oil for frying

Method:

wash and soak the urid dal for half an hour.
drain the water and grind to a smooth paste with green chilly.
chop the curry leaves
add curry leaves and salt in the batter and mix well.
Heat oil in kadai.
wet your palm with water and take out a portion of batter in your hand and make a ball out of it
press in the middle with your thumb  to make hole in it and put it directly on the oil.
If you cannot do this, take a banana leaf or a plastic paper (we use the milk cover) apply water on it. take a small portion of batter and put it on the leaf or cover.  press in the middle to make a hole. fry the vadas till golden brown.  repeat the process till the batter is over.
serve hot with sambar and coconut  chutney.

variation:  If you put the vada in rasam, it becomes rasa vada.  It is really awesome.
