THALAGAM (mix veg curry)

Thalakam, mix veg curry is made with various vegetables in coconut and white seasame seed paste gravy.  This is served along with roti, rice and also with Thiruvathira kali a sweet dish made out of rice powder with jaggery during Thiruvathira.




Let us look at the recipe now:

Ingredients:

1 medium size carrot
1 medium size colacasia
1 medium size potato
3-4 flat beans (avarakka)
1 small sweet potato
a small piece of kavathu (asian yam)
a small piece of elephant foot
2 tbsp fresh tuvar dal or fresh green peas
a small piece of green brinjal
1/4 cup tamarind juice
1/4 tsp turmeric powder
1 tbsp jaggery
salt

 (You can make combination of 5 or 7 vegetables or all the vegetables mentioned above)

For the gravy:

1/2 coconut grated
1 tbsp white sesame seed
1 tbsp rice
1 tsp urad dal
2-3 red chilli
1 tsp oil

Sesaoning:

1 tsp oil
1 tsp mustard seeds
few curry leaves

Method:

cut the vegetables into cubes, wash and cook the same in the tamarind  juice  with turmeric powder and salt.  You may add extra water to cook the same. In a kadai, heat oil, roast the urad dal and red chilli.  soak the rice in water for 10 minutes.  drain and roast the same.  roast the coconut till brown in oil.  Now grind all the roasted item by adding water to a fine paste.  Add this ground paste to the cooked vegetables and bring to a boil.  season with the items mentioned under seasoning.  serve with rice, roti and thiruvathira kali.  Thiruvathira puzhukku or kootu  see the link.
