ARINELLIKKA SAMBAR

Arinellikka or star gooseberry is normaly eaten with salt and bit chilly powder.  you can also eat this as it is.  It is stored in salt water and can be had with curd rice or dal rice or eaten as it is.  Pickle is also make with this.  Today I tried making sambar with it and was yummy with plain steamed rice.  I loved it.  My son is very fond of this nellikka he eats it with bit salt.





Now let us look at the recipe now:

Ingredients;

1/4 cup arinellikka
1 tbsp sambar powder
1 cup water
1 big onion
1/4 cup boiled dal
1 tsp oil
1/4 tsp turmeric powder
1 tsp sugar or jaggery
salt

Tempering:

1 tsp oil or ghee
1 tsp mustard seeds
few curry leaves
a pinch of hing powder

garnishing

chopped coriander leaves

Method:

Heat  oil in kadai.  add the chopped onion and nellikka and saute till soft.  add one cup water, salt, turmeric powder, sambar powder and bring to boil for 5-10  minutes.  mash and add the boiled dal,  add sugar or jaggery. boil for two minutes.  temper with the ingredients mentioned under tempering, garnish with chopped coriander leaves.

How to serve:

Serve hot with idli/dosa/plain rice.   see the link for arinellikka pickle
