TOMATO CHUTNEY

Chutney goes well with dosa, idli and sometimes with rice and dal too.  This tomato chutney made with tomato, onion, fried chana dal etc.  is one which goes with everything.  Very simple and easy to make.  I have posted varieites of chutneys which can be viewed in my blog.


Tomato Chutney



Let us look at the recipe now:


1 tomato chopped
1 onion chopped
2 tbsp chana dal
2 red chilli or green chilli
a small piece of tamarind
2 garlic cloves
a small piece of ginger
a small piece of asafoetida (you get bar of asafoetida) or you can use the normal powder we get.
1 tsp oil
salt

Tempering:

1 tsp oil
1 tsp mustard seeds
few curry leaves.

Method:

Heat oil in kadai.  fry the asafoetida piece and keep aside.  add the chana dal and fry till brown. put the tamarind piece and fry the same. add the chopped onion and saute for few minutes. add the green chilli, garlic,  tomato and saute the same till the tomato is smooth and cooked. allow to cool.  Put the sauted ingredients and balance ingredients like ginger, asafoetida salt etc. and grind to a smooth paste.  temper with the ingredients.  serve with dosa, idli, dal rice etc.
