BEETROOT GREEN PULIVITTA MASIYAL

Beetroot green poriyal is already posted by me today.  Here I am presenting the pulivitta masiyal (puli means tamarind, masiyal means made into a paste) which mean it is cooked in tamarind syrup , ground to a paste and tempered with mustard seeds, fenugreek seeds, rice and red chilli.  You can make this masiyal with or without tamarind.  See the link for the greens poiryal.

This masiyal is made with colacasia leaves or chembu leaves also.

Let us look at the recipe now:

Time taken: 30 minutes
Serves: 2

 Ingredients:

1 cup finely chopped beetroot greens
1 green chilli
salt
turmeric powder
a small piece of tamarind.

Tempering:

1 tsp oil
1 tsp mustard seeds
1 tsp red puzhungalarisi (red boiled rice)
1/4 tsp fenugreek seeds
1 red chilli broken into pieces

Method;

In 1/4 cup of water boil the tamarind and extract the pulp.  This helps in removing the raw taste of the tamarind.
Cover and cook the greens in tamarind syrup, green chilli,  salt and turmeric powder.  Add water to cover the greens.
Allow to cool.  grind to a smooth paste. Simmer the same for two minutes.
temper with the mustard seeds, rice, fenugreek seeds, broken chilli.
serve hot with plain rice.

NOTE:  If you are making masiyal without tamarind, do not tempe with the fenugreek seeds.
