ANGAYA PODI

Angayapodi is a nutritious powder which is given to ladies after delivery.  This can be had by all because the ingredients added in this has got medicinal value which cures cold, cough, indigestion,  gas etc.  In short this has got more medicinal values than the taste and flavour which you may like or may not.

All ingredients are dry fried in a  kadai and ground to a smooth powder in   the mixer.   Once you have made the podi and tried it, you can adjust the ingredients to suit your taste.

Angaya podi has been used in many Tamil households for years and is an ancient recipe. This podi or powder is a combination of spices and herbs.

A little information about the important  ingredients  is given below after the recipe.

Let us look at the recipe now:

Time taken:  1 hour
yield          :  3/4 cup

Ingredients:

I have taken 30 ml cup which is available with the medicine bottle. If you are making it for the first time, follow this recipe.  You can choose the ingredients from the list but do not skip the sundakkai, manathakali, neem flowers.
Measurement cup - 30 ml      watch youtube: angayapodi

1 cup pepper
1/2 cup cumin seeds
1 cup coriander seeds
2 red chillies
1/4 tsp dry ginger powder
1 cup tuvar dal
1/4 cup bengal gram
1/4 tsp mustard seeds
1/4 tsp Asafoetida
1 cup sundakkai vathal (turkey berry)
1 cup dry neem flowers
1 cup manathakali vathal
1/4 tsp ajwain
1/4 tsp badi saunf
1 twig curry leaves
1/2 tsp Kanda thippilli (long pepper or piper longum
salt

Method:

dry roast all the ingredients separately, cool it and powder it in a mixer.  The angaya podi or powder is ready to serve.  Mix this with hot rice, ghee and serve.  You can also use sesame oil instead of ghee.

Note:  Salt should be checked and added because in the manathakali and sundakkai vathal, is salty.  sometime the store bought ones have excess salt in it.

Enjoy this powder and do give me your feed back.  I added this to the vathal kuzhambu.  You can make use of this in rasam too.

Little information:

Coriander is an anti-oxidant, has cholesterol reducing properties, is anti-bacterial and a diuretic. Dried neem flowers help improve eyesight and also helps in the treatment of digestive disorders, especially those relating to the liver. It is traditionally used for expelling intestinal worms.

Sundakkai and manathakkali vathal when fried and eaten help in reducing gas. Sundakkai is said to have anti-bacterial and anti-microbial properties. Manathakkali is a rich source of Vitamin B and the leaves are often cooked and eaten to treat mouth ulcers. It is excellent for maintaining the health of the liver.

Sundakkai and Manathakali vathal is readily available in most stores.  We can make the vathal provided you have them in the backyard.

Curry leaves and coriander contain large amounts of fibre. Curry leaves are rich in iron, is anti-diabetic and also an anti-oxidant. It prevents premature greying of hair. Recent studies even indicate that it contains anti-cancer compounds.

Curry leaves can be stored : My personal experience : in a glass bottle, put the curry leaves and keep one green chilli.  it remains fresh for about 15 days.

Cumin again is useful in treating flatulence and is a good digestive aid.

Ginger Powder:  an appetiser and a digestive agent in addition to its taste and flavour.

Asafoetida  :  Mainly used in cooking for the flavour and taste, it is helpful in reducing the gas.

Kandan tipplli:    This helps in curing cough, cold, body ache etc.  Thippli rasam is made as a post partum dish i.e. pathiya samayal and any one can have this rasam when you are having cough, cold and body ache.

Ajwain:  It has a distinctive and unique flavour, taste and also helps in reducing the gas trouble.

Saunf:   flavourful, helps in digestion too.

Black Pepper : The health benefits of black pepper include relief from respiratory disorders, coughs, the common cold, constipation, indigestion, anemia, impotency, muscular strains, dental disease, pyorrhea, diarrhea, and heart disease.  It is a rich source of manganese, iron, potassium, vitamin-C, vitamin K, and dietary fiber. Black pepper is also a very good anti-inflammatory agent.
