Plain rice modak is made with the rice flour, tempered with mustard seeds and urid dal, few curry leaves, green chilli etc. It is very easy to make and serve as snacks too. Since Ganesh festival is only a week away, I thought of sharing this simple recipe.

Ingredients:
1 cup rice flour
1 cup water
salt as required
4 tsp oil
1 tsp mustard seeds
1 tsp urid dal
a pinch of asafoetida
one green chilli finely chopped
few curry leaves broken into pieces.

Method
In a heavy bottom vessel, mix the rice flour in water. Ensure that no lumps are formed. Add the salt and 1 ts[ oil and cook the same in low flame till the rice balls starts leaving the vessel. Cover this for 10 minutes and keep aside. OR
boil the water with salt and oil. add the rice flour slowly and mix well without any lumps. when it turns to a ball shape, switch off gas, cover and keep for 10 minutes.
After 10 minutes, temper with mustard seeds, urid dal, curry leaves, green chilli, asafoetida. Mix well with the dough. grease a modak mould. pinch out some dough and keep it in one side of the mould. close the mould. if the dough is less, fill it from the bottom side of the mould and press it to get the proper shape. Open the mould and take out the modak. repeat the process till you finish the dough. steam cook the same for 10 minutes. serve hot as it is or with chutney.
