BEANS USLI MODAK

Usli is prepared with tuvar dal, chana dal and some vegetables viz. beans, cluster beans, flat beans etc.  It is a nice side dish for rice varieties and I would love to eat the same with chappati too with some liquid subzi ofcourse.

Every time, we make urid dal stuffing for making the namkeen kozhukkattai for Ganesh Chaturthi.  This time I wanted to change the age  old tradition and decided to make the pariuppu usli with beans.

It was nice and we really enjoyed along with the sweet modakam.

I am sure you will also love this.  So let us look at the recipe now:

                Ingredients:   (for Usli)

½ cup
Tuvar dal
2-3
Green chilli (adjust according to your requirement

Asafetida a generous pinch
Salt
As required
Few
Curry leaves
¼ kg
Beans finely chopped
1” pc
Ginger (optional)

3 tbsp
Coconut oil/or any other oil
1 tsp
Mustard seeds
1 tsp
Urid dal
Few
Curry leaves
Pinch
Of asafetida
2-3 tbsp
Grated coconut

Ingredients for outer cover:
1 cup
Rice flour
1 cup
Water
2 tsp
Oil
¼ tsp
salt

Method:

Step 1

Wash and soak the tuvar dal for 30 minutes.  Drain the water, grind together with green chilli, curry leaves, salt, ginger coarsely.

Step 2

Heat water in kadai.  Grease the idli mould. Place some ground paste in it and steam cook till it is done. Allow to cool. Crumble with your hand or just pulse it for few seconds to get uniform usli.

Step 3

Heat kadai.  Put the oil when it become hot add the mustard seeds,  urid dal, hing powder.  When it is done, add the chopped beans in it and  sauté for few minutes.  Sprinkle little water  and salt and allow to cook till all the water is evaporated from it.  Add the usli in it and mix well.

Your usli is ready to fill the kozhukkattai.

How to prepare the outer cover:

Step 1

Heat water in kadai by adding salt and oil.  When the water is boiling, add the flour slowly and cook the same till you get a mass.  While adding the flour, ensure that there are no lumps formed in it. Switch off gas, cover the same and leave aside for 10-15 minutes.  When the heat is reduced and you are able to handle the same with your palm, put it on a plate and knead well so that you get a nice dough to prepared the cover.

Step 2

Pinch out a portion of it and make the cups.  Fill the usli in it and close the same as you make for the normal modak.

You can make the shape of half moon or karanji type.  Prepare all the modak and steam cook.   Your prasadam of usli kozhukkatai is ready for neivedyam.

HOPE YOU WILL ENJOY THIS DISH.  DO GIVE ME YOUR FEED BACK.  THANKS FOR VISITING THE BLOG.
