BARELY UPMA

Barley or Jau it is known as is a healthy grain we must include in our diet.  If we have some urinary problems/fever etc. first thing in the mind comes to boil some barley seeds in water and drink the same through out the day.  This helps in passing the urine without any difficulty as well as the toxin is removed from the body.

Normally, after boiling the same in water, it is thrown out.  I tried to make upma with the barley seeds and came out very tasty with some vegetables in it.

Though many people may not like it, we still can include the same once in a while in our diet.

The pictures and method is given below along with the health benefit of barley.

Let us look at the recipe now:

 INGREDIENTS:

100 gms
Barley seeds
¼ th pcs
Green/red/yellow bell pepper
1
Green chilli
Small pc
Ginger
2 tbsp
Green peas
1 tbsp
Chopped carrot
1 tbsp
Chopped beans
1 no
Onion finely chopped
1 tsp
Salt
Pinch of
Turmeric powder (optional)
1 no
Tomato chopped (optional)

Tempering:
1 tsp
Mustard seeds
1 tsp
Urid dal
Few
Curry leaves
3 tbsp
Oil
A pinch of
asafoetida

                                     Chopped coriander leaves for garnishing.

Method:

Step 1

Dry roast the barley seeds for 5 minutes. Wash and soak the same in water for 15 minutes.  I used 1:3 water because we want the upma to be little moist and not dry.

Step 2

In a kadai, heat oil.

Add the mustard seeds. When it splutters, add the urid dal, asafetida, curry leaves, green chilli and ginger.

When the dal becomes brown, add the onion and sauté for few minutes.

Add the veggies and sauté for two minutes.

Add the soaked barley in it, add salt and bring to boil.

Step 3

Transfer the above in a pressure cooker.  Cover and cook the same for 4-5 whistles in medium flame.  The barley upma is ready.  Garnish with chopped coriander leaves.

How to serve:

Serve hot with chutney, curd, sambhar & pickle.
